Hibiscus in my ears...
I was born, and grew up in province near the metropolis in the Philippines. Our culture is family oriented, and pays much respect for the elderly. Having parents who are both busy working, I grew up with my nanny and grandparents. I call my grandpa "Tatay", which in Filipino means father, and my grandma "Nanay", which means mother. Tatay's name is Amigo, Spanish term for friend, Nanay's name is Lolita, named after a beautiful actress in our country. My mom works at the office, and my dad as a lifeguard or pool monitor in Saipan, a tropical country, and a U.S. territory. I was a spoiled brat back then, my grandparents will do almost everything for me. They always want me to be happy, and have the best this world could offer.
Until my grandfather underwent a stroke or brain attack, and passed away. I was 8 year old back then, and I would never forget that moment. I didn't want to cry, believing that my grandma would feel weak if she see me doing so. I locked my self in my room, and cried a lot without anyone seeing me. Being a child, It was easy for me to move on, because I am preoccupied with many childish fantasies.
A week after my grandfather's burial,my younger brother woke up, rushing downstairs and happily told my mom that grandpa came to him, telling him to obey our parents and to love me. Mom felt goosebumps that time.
Years passed by, and I am now a grown up. Having so much experience about life, this is the only time when I have learned to appreciate my grandfather and every moment we have shared together.
I will never forget the times when he used to hold my hands, while we walk along our village. I will never forget how many times he picked up a hibiscus flower, and put it beside my ears, and kissed me. I will always remember everytime he gives me donuts and orange flavored candies. That's my Tatay Muigs. He gave me the most memorable and the sweetest childhood memories which can never be bought or sold.
Wherever you are Tatay, I know that you are watching over us. Everytime I see a hibiscus, It's you whom I will always remember.
Celebrate Uniqueness!
The most unforgettable college project I've done!
I was an irregular student way back when I was in 4th yr college. As much as I don't want to do something weird during my college life... I just don't have a choice! I have this lesson in my socio-anthropology class about the uniqueness of every individual. We were asked to dress up deviantly in a public place, and take pictures of it. It could be done in a mall, fast food, park, and any public place.. as long as It is PUBLIC.
I had a hard time thinking what to wear, and hesitant if I would really do such a thing. Until I made up my mind. I dressed up like a show girl in broadway, and ate ice cream in Mc Donald's near our university. I felt so shy and nervous, knowing that I will catch the attention of everybody. I took a lot of pictures with the customers and a fast food crew. Eventually, I became more comfortable and laughed a lot, telling my friends that I won't ever forget what I have done that day. Some were shocked with my get up,some were laughing at me and staring, as if I have done a crime!
Well, being in the field of Psychology, I give importance with the uniqueness of every individual. I appreciate that experience, because It even made me a more passionate person. I learned that nobody can suppress anyone to be who they want to be. Everyone in this world, whether deviant, or normal... deserves to be respected. Celebrate Uniqueness!
